Plimsoll is a market intelligence firm that operates across multiple sectors, providing clear, accessible analysis to help businesses make more informed decisions, across 1,600 UK market sectors. They offer a subscription based product allow users to value and compare businesses, harnessing data from companies house, websites, trade associations, search tools and customer recommendations. The current system was very dated, with challenges around UX and was only usable on desktop devices. The main target audience is business owners and individuals seeking to acquire or build connections with other companies.

Solution

Restructuring the Product Architecture When I reviewed the existing platform, I noticed that although Plimsoll’s products drew from the same core dataset, the information was being presented in a one-size-fits-all format. This meant users had to sift through data that wasn’t always relevant to their immediate needs. To solve this, I restructured the architecture around clear service entry points, each tailored to a specific business question. For example: “I want to see how my company is doing” → My Company “I wonder how the industry is performing lately” → My Industries “How is my company performing against competitors?” → Benchmarking “I need to find more customers” → Business Development By identifying these core use cases, I mapped them directly to Plimsoll’s existing product suite: • Business Valuation Service • Quarterly Board Report Service • Confidential M&A Analysis (Acquisitions) • Annual Health Check User Interface and Experience I applied a cleaner, responsive interface that reduced confusion and used clear call-to-action buttons to drive engagement. The menu is consistant throughout the design, allow users to navigate between product services. Product features included • User sign-up • User account • Portal Dashboard • Product website

Outcomes

The design and restructuring of the product transformed a data-heavy, generic platform into a more personalised, decision-making tool for users. They can now start with their business goal, rather than having to go searching for the relevant data. This not only improves usability but also strengthens the value of each product service, making it clear why each service exists and how it serves a unique purpose.
